Programs of Study
At Johnston Community College, students apply for and are admitted to programs of study. The curriculum for each program of study is designed in accordance with the Curriculum Standards mandated by the North Carolina Community College System. State approval of each curriculum is required prior to the offering of courses within a program.
On each Curriculum Standard, there are requirements for general education, major hours, and other required hours.
The terms “major” and “area of concentration” are defined by the College as follows:
- A major includes those courses which provide specific job knowledge or skill and comprise the majority of the hours in each program of study.
- An area of concentration is a group of courses required beyond the core for a specific related employment field.
College Transfer Programs
College transfer programs provide the student with the opportunity to complete up to 61 semester hours of course work that will transfer as baccalaureate credit to any college in the University of North Carolina (UNC) system.
The Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) and the Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA) enables North Carolina community college graduates of two-year associate in science programs who are admitted to constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina and to Signatory Institutions of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities to transfer with junior status.
Community college graduates must obtain a grade of “C” or better in each course and an overall GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in order to transfer with a junior status. Courses may also transfer through bilateral agreements between institutions.
Associate in Arts (AA)
The Associate in Arts degree shall be granted for a planned program of study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit (SHC) of college transfer courses. Within the degree program, the institution shall include opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and basic computer use.
Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation (AATP)
The Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation degree shall be granted for a planned program of study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit (SHC) of college transfer courses. Within the degree program, the institution shall include opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and basic computer use.
Associate in Engineering (AE)
The Associate in Engineering (AE) degree shall be granted for a planned program of study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit (SHC) of courses. Within the degree program, the institution shall include opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and basic computer use. The degree plan includes required general education and prerequisite courses that are acceptable to all state funded Bachelor of Engineering programs.
Associate in Science (AS)
The Associate in Science degree shall be granted for a planned program of study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit (SHC) of college transfer courses. Within the degree program, the institution shall include opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and basic computer use.
Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation (ASTP)
The Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation degree shall be granted for a planned program of study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit (SHC) of college transfer courses. Within the degree program, the institution shall include opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and basic computer use.
General Education Programs
Associate in General Education (AGE)
The Associate in General Education curriculum is designed for the academic enrichment of students who wish to broaden their education, with emphasis on personal interest, growth and development. Course work includes study in the areas of humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and the basic use of computers will be provided. All students preparing to enter Emergency Medical Science, Medical Assisting, Radiography, Sonography Programs (Cardiovascular Sonography and Medical Sonography), and/or Therapeutic Massage are placed in this program as a pre-major.
Associate in General Education – Nursing (AGE-N)
The Associate in General Education (AGE)-Nursing is designed for students who wish to begin their study toward the Associate in Nursing degree and a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing as based on Blocks 1 through 3 of the Uniform Articulation Agreement between the University of North Carolina’s Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs and the North Carolina Community College Associate Degree Nursing Programs which was approved by the State Board of Community Colleges and the UNC Board of Governors in February 2015. All students preparing to enter Associate Degree Nursing are placed in this program as a pre-major.
Occupational/Technical/Career Programs
Accounting and Finance
Provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and growth in the accounting and finance profession.
Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology
Provides the basic knowledge to develop skills necessary to work with residential and light commercial systems.
Applied Engineering Technology
The curriculum includes courses in safety, math, physics, electricity, engineering technology, and technology-specific specialty areas.
Associate Degree Nursing
Provides the knowledge, skills, and strategies to integrate safety and quality into nursing care, to practice in a dynamic environment, and to meet individual needs which impact health, quality of life, and achievement of potential.
Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)
Designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers.
Biotechnology
Prepares individuals to apply scientific principles and technical skills in support of biologists and biotechnologists in research, industrial, and government settings.
Business Administration
Introduces students to the various aspects of the free-enterprise system.
Cardiovascular Sonography
Provides the knowledge and skills necessary to acquire, process, and evaluate the human heart and vascular structures.
Computer-Integrated Machining
Prepares students with the analytical, creative and innovative skills necessary to take a production idea from initial concept through design, development and production, resulting in a finished part.
Computed Tomography Imaging Technology (in partnership with Edgecombe Community College)
Prepares the individual to use specialized equipment to visualize cross-sectional anatomical structures and aid physicians in the demonstration of pathologies and disease processes.
Cosmetology
Provides training and practice in the skills required of a professional cosmetologist.
Criminal Justice Technology
Provides academics/knowledge of criminal justice systems and operations. Double Major Criminal Justice Technology - Forensic Science Degree also available.
Criminal Justice Technology - Forensic Science
Focuses on local, state, and federal law enforcement, evidence processing, and procedures. Double Major Criminal Justice Technology and CJT - Forensic Science Degree also available.
Culinary Arts
Provides specific training required to prepare students to assume positions as trained culinary professionals in a variety of foodservice settings including full-service restaurants, hotels, resorts, clubs, catering operations, contract foodservice and health care facilities.
Diesel & Heavy Equipment Technology
Prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, service, and maintain diesel engines in vehicles such as Heavy-Duty Trucks over one ton classification, buses, ships, railroad locomotives, and equipment; as well as stationary diesel engines in electrical generators and related equipment.
Digital Media Technology
Prepares students for entry-level jobs in the digital design and multimedia industry. Students learn to synthesize multimedia, hypertext, computer programming, information architecture, and client/server technologies using both Internet and non-network-based media.
Early Childhood Education
Prepares individuals to work with children from birth through age eight in diverse learning environments.
Emergency Medical Science
Provides graduates with the knowledge base and skills to enter the fast-paced and challenging world of pre-hospital medicine.
Fire Protection Technology
Prepares individuals for employment or advancement in governmental agencies, industrial firms, insurance rating organizations, educational organizations, and municipal fire departments.
Health and Fitness Science
The Health and Fitness Science program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for employment in the fitness and exercise industry.
Information Technology (including Information Systems, Cybersecurity & Network Management Tracks)
The Information Technology (IT) curriculum prepares graduates for employment in the technology sector as designers, testers, support technicians, system administrators, developers, or programmers who use computer software and/or hardware to design, process, implement and manage information systems in specialties such as database services, security, business intelligence, healthcare informatics and others depending on the technical path selected within this curriculum.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (in partnership with Edgecombe Community College)
Prepares students to become MRI technologists and skilled health care professionals that are trained to use magnetic energy fields to produce images of the human body.
Mammography
Provides registered radiologic technologies the didactic and clinical experience necessary to become registered mammographers.
Mechanical Engineering Technology
Prepares students to use basic engineering principles and technical skills to design, develop, test, and troubleshoot projects involving mechanical systems. Includes instruction in principles of mechanics, applications to specific engineering systems, design testing procedures, prototype and operational testing and inspection procedures, manufacturing system-testing procedures, test equipment operation and maintenance, computer applications, critical thinking, planning and problem solving, and oral and written communications.
Medical Assisting
Prepares the individual to be a multi-skilled health care professional qualified to perform administrative, clinical, and laboratory procedures.
Medical Office Administration
The Medical Office Administration curriculum prepares individuals for employment as medical administrative personnel in the areas of medical office, medical billing and coding, dental office, patient services, and medical documents.
Medical Sonography
Provides the knowledge and clinical skills in the application of high frequency sound waves to image body structures.
Nurse Aide
The Nurse Aide curriculum prepares individuals to work under the supervision of licensed nursing professionals in performing nursing care and services for persons of all ages. Topics include growth and development, personal care, vital signs, communication, nutrition, medical asepsis, therapeutic activities, accident and fire safety, household environment and equipment management, family resources and services, and employment skills. Upon completion, the student may be eligible for listing as a Nurse Aide I and other selected Nurse Aide registries as determined by the local program of study
Paralegal Technology
Prepares individuals to perform routine legal tasks and to assist with substantive legal work under the supervision of an attorney.
Practical Nursing
The Practical Nursing curriculum provides knowledge and skills to integrate safety and quality into nursing care to meet the needs of the holistic individual, which impacts health, quality of life, and achievement of potential.
Radiography
The Radiography curriculum prepares the graduate to become a registered radiographer, a skilled health care professional who uses radiation to produce images of the human body.
Supply Chain Management
Prepares individuals for a multitude of career opportunities in distribution, transportation, warehousing, trucking operations, supply chain, and manufacturing organizations.
Therapeutic and Diagnostic Services/Nurse Aide
This curriculum is designed to prepare students for careers in Health Sciences. Students will complete general education courses that provide a foundation for success in nursing and allied health curricula. Students may select a career pathway that will prepare them for an entry level position in health care. Courses may also provide foundational knowledge needed in the pursuit of advanced health science degrees or programs. Graduates from the Nurse Aide program may be eligible to be listed on the Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR) Nurse Aide registry as a Nursing Assistant I and the N.C. Board of Nursing Nurse Aide II registry as a Nursing Assistant II. They may be employed in home health agencies, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, extended care facilities, and doctors’ offices.
Therapeutic Massage
Prepares graduates to work in direct client care settings to provide manipulation/massage of the soft tissue structures of the body to prevent and alleviate pain, discomfort, muscle spasm, and stress, and to promote health and wellness
Truck Driver Training
School Students learn skills and safety on the highway and light preventative maintenance. Upon completion, the student will be eligible to take a Class A CDL License road test.
Welding Technology
Provides students with a sound understanding of the science, technology, and applications essential for successful employment in the welding and metal industry.
Special Programs
Partnership Teach at ECU
East Carolina University College of Education has established consortium partnerships with community colleges and public schools within the university’s service region.
Partnership Teach is the affordable, online degree completion model offered by ECU’s College of Education to increase the number of high-quality teachers in local communities. Students begin by taking specific courses at Johnston Community College and then transfer to ECU to complete one of four teaching degrees culminating with student teaching in JCPS. Students graduate with a four-year degree in elementary education, middle grades education, or special education.

Cooperative Innovative High School Programs
Johnston Community College and Johnston County Public Schools collaborate to provide flexible, student-centered learning opportunities for high school students in Johnston County. This partnership maximizes the use of resources and opportunities through a variety of innovative approaches. Johnston Community College and Johnston County Public Schools meet annually to review partnership roles, responsibilities, and opportunities for expanding their partnership.
Johnston County Early College Academy
Johnston County Early College Academy opened in the fall of 2008 as a second partnership high school between Johnston Community College and Johnston County Public Schools. Students attend Early College Academy for five years, grades 9-13, on the campus of Johnston Community College. Upon completion of the thirteenth year, students are awarded both a high school diploma and an associate degree or two years of college transfer credit toward a bachelor’s degree. Students receive six years of education in five years. The program of study is tuition free. Transportation and lunches are provided by Johnston County Public Schools.
Eighth grade students residing in Johnston County Public Schools attendance area who have successfully completed all requirements for promotion to the ninth grade are eligible. To apply for admission, students must contact their middle school counselor. They must complete the online application and submit two recommendations. If selected from the application pool, students move to the next phase which is an interview.
Early College Academy students are encouraged to maintain their current involvement in community–based extracurricular activities since these students do not participate in extracurricular activities such as band and sports at the traditional public schools. Career and Technical Leadership Academy
The Career and Technical Leadership Academy is a Cooperative Innovative High School located on the JCC campus. Established in Fall 2016, the Career and Technical Leadership Academy is a five-year program open to rising ninth graders. Students can choose from one of six pathways: Applied Engineering Technology, Information Technology, Early Childhood Education, Paralegal Technology, Nurse Aide, or Mechanical Engineering Technology. Pathways lead to the completion of an associate degree preparing students for college or to gain employment in their field of study. Our focus is on College and Career Readiness with an emphasis on Leadership.
