Workforce Development and Biotechnology

Johnston Community College provides economical workforce training to meet the needs of both the general population and local businesses, industries, and organizations. Classes are designed to fit the organizational or individual needs of upgrading skills in the ever-changing workplace. Continuing education, biotechnology, customized training, career development (HRD), Career Readiness Certification, corporate training, computer training, and community programs are offered in Economic and Community Development. The offices of all programs except community programs are located at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center in Clayton.

Biotechnology Programs

All classes are held at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center. Information sessions are held online.

BioWork® Process Technician Training

Students who complete this 136-hour course will gain the basic skills and general knowledge needed for entry-level process technicians in bioprocessing, pharmaceutical, and chemical manufacturing, and participate in the human resources development aspect of the course. Course includes cGMP, quality, working, safety, measuring process parameters, chemical processes, equipment and materials, process control, facilities, and production. Job search strategies and tools, job market overview, resume preparation, and interview practice are incorporated into the course. Computer literacy, teamwork, time management, and problem solving are key components of this course.

Process Technician State Exam Review

This 24-hour review course provides extensive review before taking the Process Technician State Exam, a growing requirement trend for industries. Students will be able to take the state exam in the class.

Process Technician State Exam & Certification

Students who complete the BioWork Certificate Program are eligible to take the Process Technician State Exam. All previous BioWork students are encouraged to complete this state certification. A certification of successful completion will be awarded from CASTLE Worldwide Inc. Option of 4 hours.

Career Development 

The career development program offers Human Resource Development (HRD) courses, which provides skill assessment services, employability skills training and career development counseling to underemployed and unemployed adults and may be fee-waived for individuals who meet these qualifications. These HRD courses cover the following core components: Individual assessments, positive self-concept, communication and problem-solving skills.

Corporate Solutions 

Corporate Solutions offers professional and productivity seminars to assist local business and industry with their employee training needs. Training opportunities include:

Customized Training

The customized training program supports the economic development efforts of the state by providing education and training opportunities for eligible businesses and industries to remain productive, profitable, and within the state. The program was developed in recognition of the fact that one of the most important factors for a business or industry considering locating, expanding, or remaining in North Carolina is the ability of the state to ensure the presence of a well-trained workforce. The program is designed to react quickly to the needs of businesses and to respect the confidential nature of proprietary processes and information within those businesses. Purpose

The purpose of the customized training program is to provide customized training assistance in support of full-time production and direct customer service positions created in the State of North Carolina, thereby enhancing the growth potential of companies located in the state while simultaneously preparing North Carolina's workforce with the skills essential to successful employment in emerging industries.

Eligibility

Those businesses and industries eligible for support through the customized training program include manufacturing, technology intensive (i.e., information technology, life sciences), regional or national warehousing and distribution centers, customer support centers, air courier services, national headquarters with operations outside North Carolina, and civil service employees providing technical support to U.S. military installations located in North Carolina. In order to receive assistance, eligible businesses and industries must demonstrate two or more of the following criteria:

The business is making an appreciable capital investment;

The business is deploying new technology;

The business is creating jobs, expanding an existing workforce, or enhancing the productivity and profitability of the operations within the State; and,

The skills of the workers will be enhanced by the assistance.

Resources may support training assessment, instructional design, instructional costs, and training delivery for personnel involved in the direct production of goods and services. Production and technology support positions are also eligible for training support.

Full-time probationary employees of qualified customized training companies are eligible for training delivered by the community college.

The use of customized training funds requires that trainees are paid by the company for all time during training hours.

Auto Safety

This course is designed to meet the training and licensing requirements (initial and/or renewal) for the Vehicle Safety Inspection Program administered by the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles, License, and Theft Bureau. Upon completion, a student will understand the rules, regulations, and procedures for conducting a vehicle safety inspection; be able to inspect a vehicle properly; and be prepared to sit for the state certification exam. Successful completion requires 100% class attendance and satisfactory class participation. Late students may not be admitted to class. In addition, each student must be employed at an inspection station and possess a valid N.C. driver’s license.

OBD – On-Board Diagnostic

This course is designed to meet the training and licensing requirements (initial and/or renewal) for the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Emissions Inspection Program administered by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles, License, and Theft Bureau. Upon completion, a student will understand the rules, regulations, and procedures for conducting an OBD emissions inspection; be able to inspect a vehicle properly; and be prepared to sit for the state certification exam. Successful completion requires 100% class attendance and satisfactory class participation. Late students may not be admitted to class. In addition, each student must be employed at an inspection station and possess a valid NC driver’s license.

Gunsmithing

Gunsmith Toolmaking 144 Hours

This course introduces the student to machining operations as they relate to the gunsmithing industry. Topics include machine shop safety, measuring tools, blueprint reading, lathes, saws, milling machines, bench grinders, and layout instruments. Upon completion the student will manufacture tools necessary for the gunsmithing trade, and will perform basic operations of measuring, layout, drilling, sawing, turning, and milling and follow safe practices in these manufacturing processes. Students must also be able to obtain a pistol purchase permit from the local Sheriff’s office or possess a state issued concealed carry permit.

Gunsmith Fundamentals 140 Hours

This course introduces current materials and gunsmithing techniques as they relate to gun manufacturing. Emphasis is placed on material characteristics, applications, and tooling requirements pertaining to modern CNC “Computer Numerical Controlled” machinery. Upon completion student should be able to demonstrate competences in current gunsmith techniques such as synthetic bedding of stocks, polishing and blue various metals, heat treating of various metals as well as manufacturing a firearm to SAMMI “Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute” standard. Gunsmith Toolmaking is the prerequisite for this class. Students must also be able to obtain a pistol purchase permit from the local sheriff’s office or possess a state issued concealed carry permit.

Plumbing

NCCER Plumbing Level 1

Introduction to the Plumbing Profession, Plumbing Safety, Tools of the Plumbing Trade, Introduction to Plumbing Math, Introduction to Plumbing Drawings, Plastic Pipe and Fittings, Copper Pipe and Fittings, Cast-Iron Pipe and Fittings, Carbon Steel Pipe and Fittings, Introduction to Plumbing Fixtures, Introduction to Drain, Waste, and Vent (DWV) Systems, and Introduction to Water Distribution Systems. All students first get 72.5 hours of Core Curriculum. NCCER Level 1 Certificate earned at end of course.

Electrical 

NCCER Electrical Level 1

Modules include: Orientation to the Electrical Trade (2.5 hours), Electrical Safety (10 hours), Introduction to Electrical Circuits (7.5 hours), Electrical Theory (7.5 hours), Introduction to National Electrical Code (NEC) (7.5 hours), Device Boxes (10 hours), Hand Bending (10 hours), Raceways and Fittings (20 hours), Conductors and Cables (10 hours), Basic Electrical Construction Drawings (7.5 hours), Residential Electrical Services (15 hours), Electrical Test Equipment (5 hours). NCCER Level 1 Certificate earned at end of course.

Culinary Techniques I 

This 12-week course is a partnership between Johnston Community College and Johnston County Industries. It provides dislocated workers with an opportunity to receive the ServSafe certification and to pursue a career in the food service industry.

Wastewater Treatment Operator I & II

This 60-hour course is designed to provide preparation for participants to be able to take the North Carolina Water Pollution Control System Operators Certification Commission (WPCSOCC) Examination. Areas of study include laws and regulations, plant equipment and general equipment maintenance standards.
